What nursery educators already have by law
Employed nursery educators are insured by law under section 2 of Social Code VII. A fall in the group room or an accident on the way to the nursery is an accident at work, paid by the accident fund (Unfallkasse or Berufsgenossenschaft). The children are also insured by law while attending.
If illness means you can no longer work at all or only a few hours, the state pension scheme pays a reduced earning capacity pension. There is no statutory cover if only your job as an educator is no longer possible.

First priority for nursery educators: disability cover
The job strains back, joints and mind. Lifting, carrying and working at child height are daily routine, plus noise and responsibility for the group. Mental illness and back problems are the typical reasons why educators have to give up their job.
Disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung) pays if you can no longer do your job, in most tariffs from 50 percent. At 20 a 1,000 euro pension costs about 39 euros a month, at 35 about 68 euros. Starting early saves a lot.
Liability in nursery life
Educators in the public sector are liable to their employer under section 3 (7) TVöD like civil servants: fully for gross negligence, not for slight negligence. With church and independent providers the rule depends on the employment contract. Typical cases are a lost nursery key or a breach of supervision with consequential damage.
Personal liability policies usually exclude work related damage. In one published tariff the official liability add on for educators costs about 19 euros a year. Choose at least 50,000 euros for lost keys.
Infections and work bans
Close contact with children means educators catch infections more often. Certain notifiable diseases can lead to an official ban on working. That is one more reason for nursery educators to look for a clear rule on infections in disability insurance.
Check your vaccinations; it protects you and the children and avoids long absences.
What nursery educators rarely need
Expensive accident insurance does not replace disability insurance, because most educators leave the job through illness, not accidents. As a low cost leisure add on it can still make sense.
Self employed childminders (Tagesmutter, Tagesvater) are not covered by this page. For the self employed we have separate pages by type of business.
