Do I need insurance to fly a drone in Germany?

In short
Liability insurance never pays for your own drone, only for damage you cause to others. For crashes, pilot error and theft you need drone hull cover (Drohnenkasko). For a drone that cost up to EUR 1,000 it runs about EUR 90 to 110 a year, usually with a EUR 150 deductible. Contents insurance only helps after a fire or burglary at home. For cheap drones hull cover rarely pays off.
Guide figures from a published tariff table and from comparisons, table as of August 2023. Net premiums plus 19 percent German insurance tax.
| Example | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Drone hull cover, purchase price EUR 100 to 1,000 | EUR 89 net, about EUR 106 a year with tax |
| Drone hull cover, purchase price EUR 1,501 to 2,000 | EUR 131 net, about EUR 156 a year with tax |
| Drone hull cover, purchase price EUR 4,501 to 5,000 | EUR 257 net, about EUR 306 a year with tax |
| Cheapest hull cover offers in comparisons | from about EUR 24 a year |
| Manufacturer replacement plan, small drone, 1 year | about EUR 80 to 90 plus around EUR 75 per replacement |
Guide values as of September 2026. Very cheap hull cover offers often cover less, for example no theft away from home. That hull cover only pays off from a purchase price of about EUR 1,500 is a guide value from our quoting practice.
Worked example
This is what you receive for a total loss if you took out hull cover right after buying the drone.
| Purchase price | EUR 1,200 |
| Premium (EUR 110 net plus tax) | about EUR 131 a year |
| Age deduction from month 19, 25 percent | minus EUR 300 |
| Deductible | minus EUR 150 |
| Payout | EUR 750 |
After two premiums totalling about EUR 262 you receive EUR 750. Without a crash you would have saved the EUR 262.
In Germany there are three possible sources of money for your own drone: hull cover (Drohnenkasko, the drone version of comprehensive cover), your contents insurance (Hausratversicherung) and the manufacturer's replacement programme. Liability insurance is not one of them. It only pays for what your drone damages that belongs to someone else.
The typical loss, a crash while flying, is covered only by hull cover or a manufacturer programme. Contents insurance steps in only if the drone burns at home or is stolen in a burglary.
| Damage | Drone hull cover | Contents insurance | Liability insurance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crash, breakage after a collision | yes | no | no |
| Pilot error | yes in good tariffs | no | no |
| Theft from your home after a break-in | yes | yes | no |
| Theft while out and about | yes, often around the clock | usually no | no |
| Left behind or lost | usually no | no | no |
| Fire in your flat | yes | yes | no |
| Damage to someone else's car | no | no | yes |
Hull cover pays for repair or replacement up to the sum insured, which is based on the purchase price. Good tariffs include batteries, remote control and camera, and do not cut your payout for pilot error by claiming gross negligence.
The catch is the age deductions. In published tariffs you get the full new value for 18 months. After that the insurer deducts 25 percent, from the fourth year 35 percent, from the fifth year 50 percent and after five years 75 percent. An older drone is therefore worth only a fraction in a claim.
Many providers also only accept drones that are at most 18 months old when you sign up. If you want hull cover, decide right after you buy the drone.
Forgetting, leaving behind and losing the drone are expressly excluded in published terms. If your drone flies off and is never found, read carefully whether the tariff treats that as a crash or as a loss.
Wear and tear, ageing batteries and defects that already existed when you signed up are never covered. If you break the flight rules, for example by flying in a no-fly zone, the insurer may reduce what it pays.
Manufacturers sell their own plans that give you a replacement unit for a fixed fee per case. For a small drone one year costs about EUR 80 to 90, plus around EUR 75 per replacement, at most twice a year. You usually have to buy the plan shortly after activating the drone.
Such plans often cover water damage too, but not theft. Hull cover includes theft but applies age deductions. Which suits you better depends on whether you worry more about breakage or about theft.
If your drone cost EUR 300 to 500, hull cover takes roughly a fifth to a third of the purchase price every year, and you still pay EUR 150 yourself in a claim. Putting money aside is usually cheaper.
Hull cover makes sense for expensive drones from around EUR 1,500, if you often fly over water, forest or rocks, and if you take the drone on trips.
Questions and answers
No. Contents insurance pays for fire, burst pipes, storm and burglary, not for a crash while flying.
In many hull tariffs yes, if the wreck is recovered. If the drone cannot be found, the loss clause decides.
Often only if it is at most 18 months old and you have the receipt. Many providers do not accept older drones.
Rarely. These drones usually cost a few hundred euros, and the premium plus the deductible eat up almost all of the benefit.
Keep it and photograph the crash site. Some tariffs also pay recovery and disposal costs up to a limit.
