Good to know
The premium hangs on the engine
German motorboat tariffs are rated on engine power, not on what the boat is worth. So much hangs on that one figure that two boats of the same length can be priced far apart, and that a well kept older hull with a modest engine stays cheap to insure.
What does motorboat insurance cost?
In short
Liability starts at 49 euros a year and is rated on engine power,
not on the value of the boat.
Full cover includes theft of the outboard if it was secured with a locking bolt or similar.
From Basis-Plus the liability covers towing water skiers,
a tender up to 30 hp and the trailer at no extra premium,
the trailer once it is named in the application with its value.
Figures from the NAMMERT tariff, August 2026, annual premium including insurance tax.
Partial cover and full cover
Partial covers what happens to the boat with nobody at the helm. Full adds what happens while she is being driven.
PartialAshore and in winter storage too.
PartialIncluding fire spreading from the boat beside you on the pontoon.
PartialThe hull and everything fixed to it. A loose outboard only under full cover.
FullAfter an accident such as a collision or grounding. Not a fitting that simply fails with age.
FullRudder, shaft, propeller and gearbox after touching bottom.
FullAgainst another boat, the pontoon or the quay wall.
FullProvided it was secured with a locking bolt or similar device, or kept in a locked building.
FullHandling errors by the driver, short of intent. Gross negligence is covered by tariff.
What sets a motorboat apart
Six points where a motorboat policy differs from a sailing one.
Rated on horsepower
The premium follows engine output. Repower the boat and the premium moves, so tell us before the season, not after a claim.
Outboard theft
Covered under full cover if the outboard was secured with a locking bolt or similar device, or kept in a locked building. Ask about that condition in any quote.
Towing water skiers
Water skiing, wakeboarding and towed toys are included in liability from Basis-Plus. Check any competing quote for a towing exclusion.
Tender at no extra premium
In the liability section from Basis-Plus, used on its own up to 30 hp and within ten nautical miles of the mother boat, in Premium without the hp limit. Beyond that it needs a policy of its own.
Trailer from Basis-Plus
Carried in the liability section without extra premium, uncoupled and while manoeuvring as well, once it is named in the application with its value.
Agreed value
In Premium, and in Basis-Plus within its age rules, the sum is set in writing before anything happens, so a total loss is not an argument about what a used hull was worth that morning.
Power is not the same as value
Plainly said
A 30 year old sports boat with a fresh 300 hp outboard pays more for liability than a modern displacement cruiser worth three times as much. That looks unfair until the claims files are read: power is what causes the collisions, and the value only decides what the repair costs.
If your boat is fast and your hull is modest, ask for the liability and full cover figures separately. The split tells you where the money actually goes.
You are not on your own
Already out on the water with NAMMERT
On a motosurf board, in a jet ski team, on a sailing boat out at sea:
athletes are already racing with the NAMMERT logo.
From 2027 the ranking turns that into points, and the entry fee comes back.

Which engine figure counts?
Before you buy
Rated output at the crankshaft in kW, taken from the engine plate or the papers. If the boat carries two engines, both go in.
The three questions you actually have
Before you sign
Not “what does it cost” for your motorboat; you can work that out yourself in a minute. These are the three nobody asks an insurer out loud. Here they are, with the answers we can back up.
“Will they actually pay?”
As your broker we handle the claim with you, your motorboat included: one report to us, then we arrange the surveyor and one of more than 2,000 partner yards and follow it through to payment. The yard invoices directly; you pay the deductible and nothing else.
What happens in the first 48 hours →“Who picks up the phone?”
A family firm since 1989, now in its second generation, with three of its own offices: Königs Wusterhausen near Berlin, Salzburg and Palma de Mallorca. No call centre, no franchise. You get a named contact for your motorboat from the first hour; and after office hours, a number somebody answers.
Out of hours: +49 3375 29 28 95 →“And if I choose wrong?”
Find the same cover for your motorboat cheaper elsewhere and we make up the difference. Our comparison sets seven providers against the same criteria; including the segments where somebody else comes out ahead of us, and the one where we are the most expensive in the field.

Questions and answers
What does motorboat insurance cost?
Liability starts at 49 euros a year and is rated on engine power, not on the value of the boat.
Full cover includes theft of the outboard if it was secured with a locking bolt or similar.
From Basis-Plus the liability covers towing water skiers,
a tender up to 30 hp and the trailer at no extra premium,
the trailer once it is named in the application with its value.
Which engine figure counts?
Rated output at the crankshaft in kW, taken from the engine plate or the papers.
If the boat carries two engines, both go in.
Is engine damage covered?
An engine damaged by fire, or stolen with the whole boat, is a claim already under partial cover.
Grounding and collision damage come under full cover.
An engine that fails from inside is not a hull claim.
For that there is the machinery cover, available from Basis-Plus for engines up to ten years old.
Who pays for frost damage to the engine?
Usually nobody: frost damage is excluded in every tariff unless a storm caused it.
Proper draining and winterising is therefore your own protection.
Keep the invoices for the lay-up anyway,
because the machinery cover requires maintenance by a specialist firm.
How high is the deductible for a motorboat?
You choose between 500 and 1,000 euros on the hull cover for a motorboat;
the higher figure lowers the premium.
There are no extra deductions by type of loss.
In Basis PLUS and Premium the deductible does not apply to total loss and theft,
in Premium for theft only if the craft was kept locked away or on enclosed premises.
After five claim-free years it is halved there for the first claim;
in Basis the agreed amount always applies.
Are my own handling errors covered on a motorboat?
Yes, if the motorboat has full cover.
Then your own mistake at the helm, a grounding or a collision is paid,
and for gross negligence the insurer does not reduce the payment up to 25 percent of the sum
insured in Basis PLUS and up to 50 percent in Premium.
Only intent is excluded.
Partial cover only pays for what comes from outside.
Are storm, theft and vandalism covered on a motorboat?
Storm, hail, fire, lightning and theft of the whole motorboat are paid already under partial
cover, sinking after an accident,
theft of single parts down to the outboard and wilful damage under full cover,
in winter storage and on the trailer too; only a seasonal policy pauses in winter.
Salvage costs after an accident come on top: by official order up to the sum insured in Basis,
up to 1 million euros in Basis-Plus and up to 2.5 million in Premium.
New value or current value: what is paid for a motorboat on a total loss?
It depends on the tariff.
Premium pays the agreed value: the figure fixed at the start, no deduction new for old,
no age limit.
Basis-Plus pays the agreed value while the motorboat is up to five years old,
or older if its current value still reaches half the sum insured,
in both cases once replacement is shown.
Otherwise,
and always in Basis, the current value is paid, what the motorboat was worth just before the loss.
Does the cover apply to a motorboat in the Mediterranean and on the high seas?
Yes, if the waters belong to the cruising area of the motorboat stated in the policy.
You can choose inland waters, North Sea and Baltic, the Mediterranean or worldwide,
without surcharge for the wider level and without time limit.
Anyone in Premium who goes beyond it once is still covered for six weeks a year.
Is insurance for a motorboat required by law?
Under German law, no, apart from the Swiss part of Lake Constance.
Anyone taking a motorboat to Italy, Spain, Greece,
Denmark or Croatia (from 15 kW) needs liability cover there by law.
And almost everywhere the harbour asks for proof before it allocates a berth.
