Rig check

Check the rig and the standing rigging, to print out

Seventeen items to tick off, from the forestay to the chainplates, with the finding, the action and the date. Before the mast goes up, after the first gale, before the long passage. A completed sheet with a date on it separates the event from wear and tear when a claim is made.

The difference that counts when a claim is made

A mast lost to a gust or a collision is an event and is covered by full hull cover. A mast lost because a terminal had been cracked for years is wear and tear, and wear and tear is excluded in every set of conditions on the market, ours as much as everybody else's. A completed sheet with a date on it is the proof that you checked and maintained. In a dispute it separates the event from wear and tear, and that line decides the payment.

Worth knowing

Rig and sails belong in the sum insured, they are equipment and not accessories. A new rig or a new set of sails is a reason to report a higher sum; that costs no more than the difference in premium. With us, rig damage during a race is covered by full hull cover: club regattas from Basis-Plus, open events in Premium. Keep completed sheets and invoices together with the boat data sheet, somewhere other than on the boat.
