Can I claim boat insurance against tax?

Short answer

Not for a boat you keep for pleasure:

in the UK there is no relief on the premium for private craft.

Once the boat earns money, through charter, a sailing school or work use,

the insurance becomes a cost of that business.

The question comes up every January, when the tax return and the renewal notice arrive in the same week. For a boat kept purely for pleasure the answer in the UK is short: the premium is a private expense and there is no relief for it, whether the policy covers third party liability, the hull or both. The same holds in most of Europe. Germany is an exception that sometimes gets quoted online, because German taxpayers can enter liability premiums as a personal allowance, but that rule does not travel with the boat.

Things change when the boat is part of a business. If you let it out on charter, use it in a sailing or powerboat school, or run it as a workboat, HMRC generally treats the insurance as an allowable expense of that trade, provided it is incurred wholly and exclusively for the business. Where the same boat is also used privately, only the business share counts, and you will need records that show the split: a booking calendar, a log of charter days, invoices. A charter business also brings its own insurance questions, because a private pleasure policy usually excludes hire and reward altogether.

One cost cannot be recovered either way. Premiums carry Insurance Premium Tax, and IPT is not VAT. A VAT registered charter company that reclaims input tax on fuel, berthing and maintenance cannot reclaim the IPT on its insurance. If you are thinking about putting a boat into charter or into a company, talk to an accountant before you change the policy, because the use of the boat is written into the cover as well as into the accounts.

Health and care insurance fill the cap, so boat liability cover often no longer fits in.

no relief on the premium

Charter boat

a business expense

The tax treatment follows what the boat does, not what the policy is called.

Questions

What owners ask us about this

Is boat insurance tax deductible in the UK?

Not for a boat kept for pleasure. If the boat is used in a business, such as charter or training, the premium is generally an allowable expense of that business.

My boat is chartered for part of the year. Can I claim the premium?

Usually only the business share. Keep records of charter days and private use so the split can be shown, and make sure the policy itself allows the charter use.

Can a VAT registered business reclaim Insurance Premium Tax?

No. Insurance is exempt from VAT and Insurance Premium Tax is a separate tax, so it cannot be recovered as input VAT.
