How the place works
The belt is the main road between the Baltic and the Kattegat, and at the same time one of the most popular sailing areas in Germany. Commercial shipping, the ferries between Puttgarden and Rødby, and the tunnel construction site: traffic at very different speeds crosses in a confined space.
What breaks there
The classic case is a crossing inside the traffic separation scheme with an offshore wind and poor visibility. Add the ferries, which run to fixed schedules and do not give way, and yachts that are hard to see in the radar shadow of the coast.
What this means for your policy
As everywhere with heavy traffic, it is the liability limit that decides, not the value of the boat. Anyone sailing the belt should also know whether their policy contains a night sailing clause, because the crossing is often made in the dark.
