How the place works
Between Bingen and Koblenz the river squeezes through a narrow valley: rocks close to the fairway, blind bends and up to seven kilometres per hour of current. Going downstream means the boat travels at current plus its own speed, and the stopping distance grows accordingly.
What breaks there
Cases arise in the bends when meeting a convoy and when berthing in the current. The Loreley stretch with its alternating passage rules is where yachts regularly react too late.
What this means for your policy
What matters is the liability limit, because a freighter may be involved, and a look at whether the policy covers federal waterways with commercial traffic without restriction. Some inland policies have exceptions here.
