Worth knowing
Bossoms Boatyard Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Bossoms Boatyard is listed with 8 models, mostly motorboats, plus one open sailing boat and one motor yacht. The range included the Oyster 14 and 16, the Nell 20, the Patricia 32, the Bosun, the Hornet, the Mosquito and the Suzanna. Recorded build years run from 1989 to 2005, lengths from 3.2 to 9.7 m.
A yard producing small numbers of classic looking boats brings two topics with it. First, there is no broad market basis for the value, so an agreed fixed value is the right route, supported by the purchase contract, invoices or a survey. Second, on boats with varnished surfaces and wooden detailing repairs are handwork, which costs time and money and should be reflected in the sum insured.
NAMMERT insures Bossoms Boatyard boats regardless of build year and of where they were bought. The smaller models are trailerable, in which case transport, time ashore and theft belong in the hull cover. You can calculate the premium for liability and hull cover in the online calculator in about 5 minutes.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
My boat is a one off. How do I document the value?
With the purchase contract, invoices for engine and equipment and current photographs, and on larger boats a survey as well. From these an agreed fixed value is set that is not recalculated after a loss.
Is damage to varnish on wood covered?
If it results from an event, yes. Ageing, greying and flaking caused by weather count as wear. Photographs of the condition before the loss help to tell the two apart.

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
