Worth knowing
BWC Illmensee; cover, cost and conditions
Thirty-four model ranges are recorded for BWC Illmensee, many of them sailing boats that have been in the programme since the nineteen seventies and still are today. The Flying Bee has been built since 1973, the Flying Cruiser S since 1972. Both models are found in our portfolio, so we already insure boats of this brand.
Anyone taking part in club races with a Flying Bee or a Flying Fish is included from the Basis-Plus tariff upwards. Races with scoring status are to be stated when you take out the policy. In this way hull cover remains in place even when things get tight on the course.
Small sailing boats often move between water and trailer. Cover applies during craning, during launching, on the road and in winter storage, and the boat trailer is included at no extra premium. The premium is based on the type of boat, value, year of construction, sail area and cruising range, never on the brand.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Can a BWC Flying Bee from the nineteen seventies still be insured?
Yes. We insure regardless of year of construction, place of purchase and previous owners. In full hull cover an agreed value applies, in the Premium tariff with no age limit and with no deduction for depreciation.
Are races with a BWC sailing boat covered?
Club races are included from Basis-Plus upwards. You report races with scoring status when taking out the policy, so that they are noted in the contract and hull cover applies.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
