Febomobil builds houseboats that are widespread on German inland waters as charter boats requiring no licence, shallow-draught displacement boats with limited engine power so that they stay below the licence threshold and may be operated with a charter certificate. This charter use shapes the policy: a boat in the hands of occasional skippers has a different claims profile from an owner's boat.
For owners who use their Febomobil themselves this is good news: engine power below 15 hp means no licence requirement, low speed means a moderate collision risk, and the value lies in a range in which full hull cover is affordable. The marking requirement nevertheless applies from 3 hp, and on federal waterways equipment rules apply in addition.
The real issue with houseboats is lying at the berth, not being under way. A boat with a large superstructure catches the wind at the jetty, and storm damage while moored is the most frequent case, followed by water ingress in heavy rain through leaking hatches and windows. Both are covered by the hull insurance, water ingress however only if it is not due to inadequate maintenance. Check the seals every year, then the question is settled in a claim.
