Worth knowing
Gibert Marine; cover, cost and conditions
60 model ranges are recorded for Gibert Marine, predominantly sailing yachts of the Gib-Sea range with years of construction from 1971 to 2005. However broad the programme may be, third-party liability remains the basis for each of these boats, with a limit of indemnity of 10 to 50 million euros depending on the tariff level.
The levels are called Basis, Basis-Plus and Premium. On top of these come the limited hull cover with fire, storm, lightning strike, theft of the entire boat and winter storage damage, as well as the full hull cover with collision, grounding, vandalism and theft of parts. Compensation is paid on the agreed value with no deduction for depreciation.
Production lies in the past, and many of these yachts are used boats today. Cover is provided regardless of the year of construction, the place of purchase and previous owners, and in the Premium tariff without any age limit on the full hull cover. With sailing yachts the sail area is included in the premium, not the engine power.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
What limit of indemnity is possible in third-party liability?
Between 10 and 50 million euros, depending on the chosen level Basis, Basis-Plus or Premium. Third-party liability is the basis of every policy, and the hull modules are built on top of it.
Does the size of the model programme change the premium?
No. What matters is the type of boat, value, year of construction, sail area or engine power and cruising range. How many model ranges a yard has had plays no part in the rating.
The cover that fits
For the whole class of boat
What matters for your boat depends less on the brand than on engine output, how a claim is settled and the waters you sail.

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
