Worth knowing
Skibsplast; cover, cost and conditions
Skibsplast built GRP boats in Norway between 6 and 7.3 metres, console and cabin boats with high freeboard for the Norwegian coast, designed for cold water and a short steep sea. The boats are used all year round, often with an onboard heater. Diesel heaters with exhaust ducting through the hull are a source of damage in their own right: installed professionally they are unproblematic, improvised they are the most frequent cause of fire in year-round operation.
The second point in year-round operation is frost. We cover frost damage if the boat has been made winter-proof properly, which during continued use in winter means antifreeze in the cooling circuit, an empty fresh water system and a dry bilge between trips. A boat in which water stood through the frost does not have a frost problem but an omission, and that is not insurable.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is a retrofitted onboard heater included in the cover?
Yes, as permanently installed equipment; state its value in the accessories group. The condition is a professional installation; improvised exhaust ducting is a cause of fire in its own right.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
