Suvi Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Suvi builds simple GRP boats in Finland between 4.3 and 5.1 metres, open rowing and motorboats for lakes, fishing waters and skerries. They are small, robust boats with modest engine power and a low value, often below 10,000 euros including the engine. At this size the question of hull insurance arises differently than with a cabin boat: the loss is bearable, the liability risk is not.
Third-party liability is the building block that counts here; it covers personal injury, property damage and financial loss to third parties with 10 to 50 million euros and costs from about 49 euros a year. Anyone who moves their Suvi solely with oars or an electric motor of under 3 hp does not need boat third-party liability from us at all: as a rule private liability insurance responds in that case. With a combustion engine things look different, and from 15 hp the licence requirement is added.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is hull insurance worthwhile on a small rowing boat with an engine?
Rarely. Third-party liability is more important; it covers the risk that exceeds the value of the boat many times over. Hull insurance becomes worthwhile as soon as the engine has a considerable value.

Series by Suvi, with value and cover
Suvi 5700 / 6100 is a motorboat from Suvi (Finland), built since 2000, and today changes hands at between €25,000 and €60,000.
Suvi 3800 / 4100 is a motorboat from Suvi (Finland), built from 1990 to 2020, and today changes hands at between €4,000 and €12,000.
Suvi 4400 / 5300 is a motorboat from Suvi (Finland), built since 1995, and today changes hands at between €6,000 and €26,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
