Aquacruiser builds houseboats in the upper segment for German inland waters, with larger superstructures, homely fittings and values well above the charter boat average. On a boat designed as a floating holiday home, the focus of the insurance shifts from being under way to lying at the berth and to the contents.
The contents are the point owners underestimate. A houseboat fitted out for living holds kitchen appliances, televisions, furniture and personal belongings worth as much as a small household. Personal effects are included at no extra premium up to three per cent of the sum insured, at least 1,000 and at most 3,000 euros. Anything above that should be declared as a separate item, with electronics and furnishings listed separately from the value of the boat.
At the berth, the way the boat is moored and the shelter from the weather are what count. A houseboat on an exposed pontoon takes storm damage, and in prolonged frost the hull icing up is added to that. Our policy covers frost and ice damage within the hull insurance conditions, but it requires that the water system has been winterised. A pipe that bursts because tanks were not drained is a consequence of maintenance, not an insured event.

How do I insure furnishings and appliances?
