Excess Catamarans; cover, cost and conditions
Excess is the catamaran brand of the Beneteau group launched in 2019 and is laid out closer to sailing than its sister brand Lagoon, with twin aft helm stations, more sail area and sportier handling. For insurance purposes the young range is an advantage: all hulls are of recent build year, well documented and supplied with spare parts through the yard's distribution network. Repair costs are therefore calculable, and with these build years an osmosis risk is practically non-existent.
What determines the premium on an Excess is the combination of value and cruising range. A current catamaran of twelve metres and upwards quickly reaches six figures, and most owners sail the Mediterranean or plan the Atlantic circuit. Both can be underwritten; for the Caribbean the hurricane rule from June to November applies, and for the Mediterranean the corresponding cruising range level is sufficient, with no surcharge for worldwide cover.
The sportier design brings the racing question with it. Excess owners take part in races more often than owners of charter catamarans, and races are not included in standard hull insurance. Including them costs a surcharge and then also covers what typically happens in a race: rig damage, collisions on tight courses and damage to the bow during manoeuvres under competitive pressure.

Is an Excess cheaper to insure than a used yacht of the same size?
Often yes, because recent build years have no osmosis or rig age issue and spare parts are available through the yard. Value and cruising range remain the determining factors.
Do I need an extension for the Mediterranean?
Yes, the North Sea/Baltic and Mediterranean level. It is considerably cheaper than worldwide cover and is sufficient for all European Mediterranean waters.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
