Worth knowing
Wenonah Canoe; cover, cost and conditions
Wenonah builds Canadian canoes in Kevlar and composite in Minnesota; Prospector and Spirit II are touring boats that are considerably lighter than polyethylene canoes and therefore have a practical advantage on portages. The construction drives the value: a Kevlar canoe lies in the middle to upper four-figure range.
Kevlar and composite are repairable, and that is the argument for hull insurance. A crack after contact with a rock or a damaged topside after a hard landing can be repaired properly; with these boats a repair occurs more often than a total loss. At a four-figure value, hull insurance pays off sooner than with a plastic boat.
The weight is at the same time the weak point. A light Canadian canoe is sensitive to point loads, when carrying it, when loading it, when setting it down on stones. Such damage is covered as far as it results from a single event. For wilderness trips outside Europe you need the worldwide cruising range level. We do not offer boat third-party liability for muscle-powered boats; check your private personal liability insurance.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is hull insurance worthwhile on a Kevlar canoe?
Yes. Damage to the laminate is repairable, a repair occurs more often than a total loss, and at a four-figure value it pays off quickly.
Is damage while carrying covered?
Yes, as far as it results from a single event, a fall, setting the boat down on stones, a point load while loading. Material fatigue is not.

Nautical information What counts before you cast off, papers, equipment, waters
Licence
No licence required; muscle-powered craft are licence-free, federal waterways included.
Registration
No registration required. Some waters do ask for a local permit or sticker before you launch.
Waters
Inland lakes, rivers and the coast, mind nature-reserve rules; many stretches are closed seasonally.
Equipment
Buoyancy aid or lifejacket, buoyancy bags in the boat, spraydeck, a waterproof case for phone and papers, a whistle.
Cruising range
The agreed cruising range is stated in the policy and can be extended for a single trip at any time.
Weather
Offshore wind is the main risk: it carries you away from the bank and makes the return hard. Check wind direction and the gust forecast before you launch.
General guidance, not a complete account; what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and your boat’s manual. Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a canoe transport and storage are the risk, not the water. Theft from the roof rack is the most common case.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repairs are predictable. Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
