Insurance for DJs in Germany: liability, equipment and income

Whether you play clubs in Berlin, weddings in Bavaria or corporate events in Frankfurt, as a DJ in Germany you bring thousands of euros of gear into other people's venues and run cables across crowded rooms. One guest tripping or one stolen controller can cost more than the fee. This page explains which insurance DJs need for liability, equipment and income, and what it costs.

Insurance for DJs in Germany

The question almost everyone asks first

A guest trips over my cable and breaks a wrist. Who pays?

If you laid the cable, the claim is against you: treatment, compensation for pain and lost earnings. That is what professional or business liability insurance (Berufshaftpflicht or Betriebshaftpflicht) is for. It checks whether you are liable, fights unjustified claims and pays justified ones. Without it, you pay yourself.

What goes wrong in this trade

  1. 01

    Injured guests

Cables across the dance floor, a falling speaker stand, a hot light: injured guests claim compensation.

  2. 02

    Venue equipment

Your setup overloads the house system, a drink ends up in the hired mixer, the parquet floor gets scratched.

  3. 03

    Stolen gear

Controller, laptop and speakers taken from the car outside the club or from the hotel corridor after the wedding.

  4. 04

    Broken gear

Beer spilled over the controller, a speaker cracked in transit, rain at a garden party.

  5. 05

    Unable to play

You are ill or injured and cannot play the wedding. The fee is lost and the client is upset.

  6. 06

    Hearing

Years of loud volume leave their mark. Hearing damage can end a career.

The insurance you need

Essential

Professional indemnity

Strongly advised

Electronic equipment

Covers controller, laptop, speakers and lights against theft, breakage and liquid, on the road and on stage.

Accident insurance

As a self employed DJ you have no statutory accident cover unless you join a Berufsgenossenschaft voluntarily.

Depends on the business

What it costs: example prices

Practical tips from your broker

  1. Have damage to hired and borrowed equipment expressly included. Many liability policies exclude it otherwise.
  2. Ask the venue which sum insured it requires before the gig and keep your certificate of insurance ready.
  3. Read the clause on theft from vehicles: cover often applies only to a locked boot or at certain times.
  4. Keep a list of serial numbers and receipts. Without proof, every claim drags.
  5. If you organise a party yourself, you need event organiser liability and must register the music with GEMA yourself.
  6. Wear hearing protection and consider income protection early, while you are healthy.

Frequently asked questions

Questions and answers

Do I need liability insurance as a DJ in Germany?

Not by law.

But many clubs, venues and promoters require it in the contract,

and a single injured guest can cost more than a year of fees.

What does DJ liability insurance cost?

A published tariff example quotes about €75 a year for €5 million cover.

With hired equipment included, €100 to €250 is typical.

Do I have to register music with GEMA as a DJ?

Registering the event is usually the promoter's job.

DJs who make copies of musical works pay themselves under tariff VR-Ö, before the gig.

Is my gear covered by contents insurance?

Equipment used for work is usually not covered, or only partly.

For controller, laptop and sound system,

electronics insurance with cover away from home is the right choice.

Am I covered by statutory accident insurance at gigs?

As a self employed DJ only if you join a Berufsgenossenschaft voluntarily under section 6 SGB VII.

Otherwise private accident insurance helps.

What if I organise a party myself?

Then you are the organiser and liable for the whole event.

Your DJ liability policy usually does not cover that; event organiser liability does.
