Insurance for electroplating, powder coating and surface finishing in Germany
Open tanks of acid, chrome and nickel, curing ovens and powder booths: a plating or coating shop in Germany carries environmental and fire risks most small firms never face. And because you finish other people's parts, a bad batch damages your customer's goods as well as your reputation. This page explains what surface finishing businesses need, what German law says and what cover roughly costs.
Am I covered if I ruin a customer's parts during coating?
Not automatically. Many German liability policies exclude damage to items you are working on. You can add cover for processing damage, usually with its own limit. For plating and powder coating this is one of the key points in the contract. Redoing your own work is never insured.
What goes wrong in this trade
01
Tank leak
A cracked tank or burst pipe lets acid, chrome or cyanide solution reach the soil, sewer or groundwater. Clean up and expert reports quickly run into six figures.
02
Booth fire
Powder dust burns, and extraction systems and filters collect it. One spark or an overheated curing oven can set the hall alight.
03
Customer parts ruined
Wrong coating thickness, blistering or hydrogen embrittlement: the parts are scrap, or they fail later at the customer.
04
Production line stopped
If coated parts do not fit during assembly, your customer claims sorting, replacement and line downtime.
05
Rectifiers and ovens fail
A broken rectifier or burner halts the line, and spare parts often take weeks.
06
Burns and fumes
Splashes from tanks and fumes during make up cause some of the worst workplace injuries in the trade.
Pays on top of statutory accident insurance, for example after serious chemical burns, also off duty.
What it costs: example prices
Premiums depend mainly on the process. Powder coating without tanks is cheaper than hard chrome plating or lines with cyanide baths. Tank volume, turnover, fire protection and industrial customers also count.

Practical tips from your broker
List every tank, storage vessel and the waste water treatment in your environmental liability; unlisted installations are often not covered.
Add processing damage to customer parts and set the limit by the value of your largest batch.
Consider separate environmental damage cover for soil and water clean up ordered by the authorities.
If you supply the car industry, include extended product liability with removal and refitting costs.
Tell the insurer about spark detection and extinguishing systems in your extraction; it often affects the premium.
Set the business interruption indemnity period with the delivery time for rectifiers, ovens and booths in mind.
