Seasonal cover, in the boat insurance glossary
Boat insurance term, area: Contract
Seasonal cover insures a boat only for the months it is used and switches off for the rest of the year. The yearly cost falls, but the protection disappears exactly while the boat sits unattended: ashore on a cradle, in a storage shed, under a tarpaulin or on a trailer. A February gale that pushes the yacht in the next cradle onto the hull, a fire in the shed, a theft from the yard, all of that happens outside the insured months. The saving shows up on the invoice, the gap only in the claim.
What to check: Which months does the policy name as insured, and does cover continue while the boat is ashore, being lifted out, launched, repaired or moved on a trailer? If the contract runs for less than a year, does it end automatically on the agreed date, or does it renew and need notice?
