Lake Garda will want a cleaned hull from 2027
The regions bordering Lake Garda have agreed a cleaning requirement for visiting boats. Anyone trailering a boat there from another lake, a river or the coast must have the hull and drive sanitised before it goes in the water.

In late April 2026 the Region of Veneto adopted an interregional law on navigation at Lake Garda. For owners the substance is a sanitising requirement: a boat brought to the lake from other waters must have its hull and engine cleaned before launching. According to the region the rule takes effect on 1 January 2027. Boats permanently based on Lake Garda are not the target; visiting boats are.
The reason is the spread of non native species. Mussels and larvae travel as stowaways in the growth on the underwater hull, inside the drive unit and in cooling water, and a boat on a road trailer covers the distance between two catchments in a matter of hours. Because three administrations meet at the lake, the law had to be carried by all of them: the regions of Lombardy and Veneto together with the autonomous province of Trento.
On the proof itself, the German automobile club ADAC, whose skipper service tracks European inland rules, describes a certified procedure, written confirmation that the cleaning was carried out, a marking or vignette, and checks by the authorities. It puts the penalty range at 414 to 2,066 euros and cites a Veneto regional law of 5 May 2026 as the legal basis. It also names the waters visiting boats typically arrive from, among them Lake Constance, the Bavarian lakes, Lake Como and Lake Iseo.
The practical detail is still missing. Which businesses may carry out the cleaning, what the procedure involves and what it costs has not been settled, on the ADAC's account, and the implementing rules are being drafted. Anyone planning a 2027 season on the lake would do well to deal with it over the winter, when the boat is out of the water anyway, rather than at the ramp in spring.
What this means for owners
Two things are worth keeping apart here. A fine for missing proof is a regulatory penalty rather than a claim, whereas the road journey to the lake is, for many trailer boats, the riskiest stretch of the year. The craft affected are trailer boats and sportsboats on road trailers, personal watercraft, powered inflatables and small cabin boats, the classes that move between catchments in the first place. That makes two questions worth putting to your insurer before the trip: whether the Italian lakes fall inside the cruising area on your schedule, and whether the boat is insured while it is on the trailer. If a yard damages the gelcoat while pressure washing, that is in the first place a matter for the yard's liability cover, which is one more reason to keep the cleaning certificate.
