Can I drive barefoot or in flip-flops in Germany without losing cover?

In short

Can I drive barefoot or in flip-flops in Germany without losing cover? It is allowed, the road traffic rules (StVO) do not ban it. Liability insurance always pays damage to others. But if you crash because your foot slips off the pedal, fully comprehensive cover (Vollkasko) can cut payment for gross negligence, which hurts with damage of several thousand euros. Firm flat shoes are the safe choice.

What it costs

What is at stake if Vollkasko cuts payment after a flip-flop accident.

ExampleTypical range
Vollkasko for one year, age 35, SF 10about 400 to 900 euros
Fine for barefoot driving without danger0 euros
Rear end crash, own damage 6,000 euros, 25 percent cut1,500 euros paid by you
Same crash with a waiver in the policyonly the excess, for example 300 euros

As of October 2026.

The cut rate is a guide value from practice; the actual rate depends on the case and your policy.

Worked example

Rear end crash on the way to the lake

A driver slips off the brake with a flip-flop. Own damage 6,000 euros, other car 3,000 euros.

Other carpaid by liability, downgrade as after any liability claim
Own car without waivercut possible, about 1,500 euros at 25 percent
Own car with waiver6,000 euros minus excess

The other driver is protected. Whether you lose money depends on your Vollkasko terms.

What German traffic law says

There is no shoe requirement for private drivers in Germany. Driving barefoot or in flip-flops does not break any rule on its own. The basic rule still applies: drive with constant care and endanger no one.

A fine only comes into play if your footwear contributes to a mistake. For professional drivers, accident prevention rules can require firm shoes that enclose the foot.

What your car insurance pays

Motor liability (Kfz-Haftpflicht) pays damage to others even if you drove barefoot or in flip-flops. You lose no-claims classes as after any liability claim.

Vollkasko is different. If you cause the damage through gross negligence, the insurer may cut payment according to your degree of fault (section 81 of the Insurance Contract Act, VVG). Whether a slipped flip-flop counts as gross negligence depends on the case.

Policies that waive the cut

Some Vollkasko policies waive the cut for gross negligence fully or up to a limit; the exceptions, such as alcohol, are in the terms. With that waiver you normally keep your cover when driving barefoot.

Without it, a cut is possible. Check your policy before driving in beach shoes all summer.

Step by step

  1. Keep firm flat shoes in the car.
  2. Do not leave flip-flops in the footwell.
  3. Look for a waiver of the gross negligence cut in your policy.
  4. If you drive for work, check your employer rules.
  5. After a crash, state truthfully what you wore.

Checklist

  • Firm shoes in the car
  • Footwell clear
  • Gross negligence waiver in the policy
  • Rules for work trips known

Common mistakes

  • Leaving flip-flops loose in the footwell
  • Believing liability refuses because of your shoes
  • Choosing a policy without waiver to save a few euros
