Do German car insurers check my Schufa credit score?
In short
Do German car insurers check my Schufa credit score? Usually yes: before signing, many car insurers request a credit check from Schufa or another credit agency. It affects acceptance, payment options and sometimes the premium. An insurer must still offer you liability cover unless it has previously cancelled you for unpaid premiums. Comprehensive cover may be refused.

Worked example
Driver with a negative entry after a debt collection case
He applies for liability and comprehensive cover for a compact car and wants to pay monthly.
Liability cover
must be offered, possibly at a higher premium
Comprehensive cover
refused
Monthly payment
not available
Annual premium in advance instead of instalments
estimate 3 to 6 percent cheaper
With advance payment and partial instead of comprehensive cover he often still gets a workable policy. In parallel he has the settled entry removed.
Why car insurers check Schufa
An insurer wants to know whether you will pay. Before signing it usually asks a credit agency, often Schufa, sometimes another one. Comparison sites often trigger this check in the background. The result decides whether you get the contract, which payment options you get and at what premium.
A credit score may only be used if it was calculated with a scientifically recognised method, is not based on your address alone and data protection law is respected (section 31 of the Federal Data Protection Act, BDSG).
You still get liability cover
German motor liability insurance comes with a duty to accept. An application for a car counts as accepted unless the insurer rejects it in writing within two weeks or makes a different offer because of a provably higher risk. It may only refuse for a few reasons, for example if it previously cancelled you for unpaid premiums (section 5 of the Compulsory Insurance Act, PflVG).
With poor credit you may only get the legal minimum sums and no extras such as breakdown cover. For partial and comprehensive cover (Teilkasko, Vollkasko) there is no duty to accept.
Where insurers get their information
Schufa is only one source. Information from your previous insurer and an industry alert system also matter for your rating.

What to do with poor credit
Ask the credit agency for your data copy; the first one is free. Have wrong or settled entries corrected. Offer to pay the annual premium in advance; it is cheaper anyway and opens tariffs that stay closed with monthly payment.
A car in a high type class (Typklasse) is hard to insure fully with poor credit. An excess lowers the premium noticeably. If a family member insures the car, all details must be correct, including the list of drivers.
When Schufa does not matter
With a clean payment record you will not notice the check. Your no-claims class does not depend on Schufa, only on your claims history. Car insurers with no credit check at all are rare and usually require advance payment.
Step by step
Request your data copy from Schufa and other agencies.
Have wrong or settled entries corrected.
Choose annual payment in advance.
If needed, apply for liability cover referring to the duty to accept.
Have several insurers asked for comprehensive cover.
