Do company car drivers get their own no-claims class in Germany?

In short

Not automatically. In Germany the no-claims class (Schadenfreiheitsklasse, SF) belongs to the policyholder, which for a company car is the employer, and many fleet contracts have no class per car at all. Company car drivers only get their claim free years credited if employer and insurer agree, often only with proof of a minimum number of driving days a year. There is no legal right to their own class.

Worked example

Engineer from Canada returns his company car after five years in Germany

He drove the car alone and claim free and now buys his own car. His Canadian record is not accepted.

No agreement, start as a beginner in SF 0about EUR 1,150
With confirmation, insurer credits three years (SF 3)about EUR 275
Saving in year oneabout EUR 875
Conditioninsure the new car within the insurer's deadline

The employer's confirmation can be worth around EUR 875 in the first year. How much is credited is up to the new insurer. Calculated with guide values on a base premium of EUR 500.

Why the class belongs to the employer

A German no-claims class is tied neither to the car nor to the driver but to the policyholder. For a company car that is the employer. If you drive a company car accident free for ten years, the employer's class improves, not yours.

Many fleet contracts have no class per vehicle at all and price on the loss ratio of the whole fleet. Some small fleet tariffs keep individual classes running in the background, others put all vehicles in a shared minimum class. Your contract's additional conditions show how it works.

When drivers can take their claim free years along

Crediting company car years is possible but voluntary. You need the employer's consent and an insurer willing to accept it. Some insurers ask for proof that you drove the car yourself on a minimum number of days a year and set a deadline between returning the company car and the new policy. The employer confirms the claim free period in writing.

The new insurer decides whether to accept the years one to one or place you lower. Drivers using pool cars have little chance, because no vehicle can be linked to one person. The safest route is a written agreement when you receive the company car.

Bringing your own class into the company car

Some employers offer to place your private no-claims class on the company car. Your claim free years then keep growing and are added up when you leave. The downside: every claim with the company car now hits your own class.

Only agree if you alone drive the company car and the return of the class is agreed in writing, including if you are dismissed. Your dormant class without a car is kept by many insurers for at least seven years anyway, so you do not lose it straight away.

Foreign no-claims history and managing directors

No-claims years from abroad are credited by some German insurers in part, by many not at all. Years driven in a German company car can therefore be your most valuable record, if your employer confirms them.

For the managing director's car some fleet tariffs offer a special placement. One published tariff as of October 2026 places a single car registered to the managing director, shareholder or owner in SF 10 if it was claim free for twelve months. Such special classes do not travel: when the contract ends the insurer reports the actual claims record, not the special class.

Step by step

  1. Ask when you receive the company car whether the years will be confirmed later.
  2. Put the agreement in writing in the company car contract.
  3. Keep a logbook or other proof that you used the car alone.
  4. Request the written confirmation before you return the car.
  5. Insure your own car within the insurer's deadline and submit the confirmation.
  6. Check the class on your first premium notice.

Checklist

  • Agreement on crediting in writing
  • Driving days per year provable
  • Car driven alone, not a pool car
  • Employer's confirmation of the claim free period
  • Insurer's deadline after return in view
  • Foreign no-claims letters kept as backup

Common mistakes

  • Assuming company car years count automatically
  • Asking for confirmation years after leaving the employer
  • Bringing your private class in although colleagues drive the car too
  • Treating the managing director's special class as transferable

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

Can my employer transfer the company car's no-claims class to me?

The employer can agree but does not have to.

The insurer must also accept it.

Without both you start like a beginner with your own car.

How many years will be credited?

That is the new insurer's decision.

Some accept confirmed years in full, others place you lower.

There is no right to a particular class.

Does a fleet even use no-claims classes?

Many fleet contracts do not; the fleet's loss ratio counts instead.

Some small fleet tariffs still use classes and keep them running in the background.

Will my no-claims record from home count in Germany?

Some insurers credit foreign records in part, many not at all.

Bring a letter from your previous insurer in any case, ideally in English or German.

Does the managing director get a better class?

In some fleet tariffs yes, for one car registered to him or her.

This special placement applies only within the fleet tariff and does not move with a switch.

Do credited years also apply to fully comprehensive cover?

If the insurer credits them, usually for liability and Vollkasko.

Partial cover (Teilkasko) has no no-claims class.
