Does pet insurance get more expensive as my pet ages in Germany?

In short

Yes, almost always. Many German policies use age bands (Altersstufen): in one published dog tariff, the same cover costs more than twice as much at age 6 as for a puppy, about EUR 21 instead of 9 a month. Some policies add a fixed yearly increase (Beitragsdynamik), for example 9 percent, and general adjustments in 2026 reached up to 25 percent for dogs and 20 percent for cats.

Worked example

Jack Russell insured as a puppy, comfort cover

How the premium develops through the age bands alone, without general adjustments.

Up to 2 years, EUR 23 times 12about EUR 276 a year
3 to 5 years, EUR 28 times 12about EUR 336 a year
From 6 years, EUR 60 times 12about EUR 720 a year
Total over the first ten years of lifeabout EUR 4,700
With general adjustments of a few percent a yearmore like EUR 5,500 to 6,500

Most of the premiums fall in the last age band. Before signing, ask not for the starting price but for the premium at age 6 and at age 10.

Three ways your premium goes up

The first is age bands. The policy states which premium applies at which age. When your pet has a birthday and moves into the next band, you pay the higher rate from the next policy year, with no change in cover.

The second is an agreed yearly increase. Some policies raise the premium by a fixed percentage each year, regardless of age. It is written in the application but easy to miss if you do not read German fine print. The third is a general adjustment (Beitragsanpassung): when vet costs rise across a tariff, the insurer raises premiums for all contracts in it.

All three can stack. A pet that enters the top age band, in a policy with a fixed increase, in a year with a general adjustment, can cost more than twice as much within a year.

Type of increaseWhen it appliesRight to cancel because of it
Age bandafter the birthday, usually from the next policy yearusually not, it was agreed from the start
Fixed yearly increaseevery year on the renewal dateusually not, it is in the contract
General adjustment by the insurerafter notice, when costs in the tariff riseyes, within one month of the notice (section 40 VVG)
Higher deductible at older agein some policies from a certain ageonly if it was not already in the contract

What one published tariff costs by age

A published dog tariff for a healthy, neutered Jack Russell shows the pattern clearly. Basic cover costs about EUR 9 up to age 2, about EUR 11 at 3 to 5 and about EUR 21 a month from 6. In the more extensive cover it is about EUR 23, 28 and 60.

For cats the pattern is the same at a lower level. Surgery cover for a kitten costs about EUR 8 to 12 a month, for a cat aged 7 to 10 about EUR 18 to 22.

Why an older pet cannot simply switch

For an older pet, switching is rarely a real option. Many insurers accept dogs and cats only up to about 7 to 10 years. A new contract starts new waiting periods (Wartezeiten), and anything in your pet's records is normally excluded as a pre-existing condition (Vorerkrankung).

Put plainly: a ten year old dog with a joint diagnosis will hardly find a new policy that pays for exactly that. Before you cancel over a price increase, first check whether another insurer will still accept your pet.

What you can do about rising premiums

In your existing contract, a higher deductible (Selbstbeteiligung) or a move to a slimmer tariff with the same insurer, for example from full cover to surgery cover, often helps. Usually no new health check is needed, but ask first.

The strongest lever comes before you sign: choose policies with few or flat age bands and no fixed yearly increase, and ask for the premiums in the later bands. A policy that is EUR 5 cheaper for a puppy can be EUR 30 more expensive at age 8.

Step by step

  1. Check the application or tariff sheet for age bands and when the next one starts.
  2. Check whether a fixed yearly increase is agreed and how high it is.
  3. Work out the premiums for the later bands, not just the starting price.
  4. When you receive an adjustment notice, note the date: you have one month to cancel.
  5. Before cancelling, check whether another insurer will accept your pet at its age and with its records.
  6. Alternatively, adjust the deductible or scope within the same contract.

Checklist

  • Age bands and their premiums known before signing
  • No or only a small fixed yearly increase
  • No automatic rise of the deductible with age, or you know about it
  • Switch to a smaller tariff possible without a new health check
  • No insurer right to cancel after a claim, or waived after some years
  • Savings planned for the deductible in old age

Common mistakes

  • Comparing only the starting price and overlooking the band from age 6
  • Cancelling over an increase although no other insurer will take the pet
  • Letting the one month deadline after an adjustment notice pass
  • Giving up running cover for a chronic illness that is already covered

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

From what age does pet insurance get more expensive in Germany?

Bands up to 2 years, 3 to 5 years and from 6 years are common. With many policies the premium rises sharply from about 5 to 6 years.

Can the insurer simply raise the premium?

Age bands and fixed increases are in the contract. For a general adjustment the insurer must notify you at least one month ahead and point out your right to cancel.

Can I cancel after a price increase?

Yes, if the premium rises without more cover, within one month of receiving the notice. This is set out in section 40 of the German Insurance Contract Act (VVG). It usually does not apply to agreed age bands.

Does the premium stay the same if I insure my pet young?

No, it usually rises with the age bands. But you avoid exclusions for pre-existing conditions and the age limit for new contracts.

Are there policies without age bands?

Some policies only use the age at sign up. They can still become more expensive through general adjustments. Ask about both.

Is it still worth it for a ten year old pet?

If the policy is already running and covers conditions your pet has, usually yes. A new contract at that age is expensive, often comes with exclusions and pays off less often.
