In short
How much does dog surgery cost in Germany? Usually EUR 500 to 5,000 per operation. Neutering sits at the low end, a torn cruciate ligament often costs EUR 1,500 to 4,000 with diagnosis, anaesthesia and aftercare. The surgery fee alone under the official vet fee scale (GOT) is EUR 230.89 to 692.67 net, before anaesthesia, X-rays, implants and the clinic stay.
Net GOT rates from the official fee schedule, total costs from published cost examples and premiums from a policy comparison.
| Example | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Cruciate ligament surgery, fee only, one to three times the base rate | EUR 230.89 to 692.67 net, EUR 274.76 to 824.28 gross |
| Torn cruciate ligament, complete treatment with diagnosis and aftercare | about EUR 1,500 to 4,000 |
| Bloat with fixation, fee only, two to four times in the emergency service | EUR 513.10 to 1,026.20 net |
| Slipped disc, complete treatment | about EUR 2,000 to 5,000 |
| Surgery cover, young small dog, well rated policies | about EUR 184 to 206 a year (test from 2021) |
| Surgery cover, Labrador aged seven | about EUR 249 to 324 a year (test from 2021) |
As of October 2026.
The GOT amounts are official and net.
Total costs come from published cost examples; the ranges for neutering are guide values from our quoting practice.
The premiums come from a 2021 test and are likely higher today because of the new GOT.
Worked example
A six year old Labrador limps after playing. The clinic diagnoses a torn cruciate ligament and operates a week later, billing at twice the base rate. Materials, medication, clinic stay and aftercare are guide values.
| Examination, twice the base rate | EUR 47.24 |
| Two X-rays, twice the base rate | EUR 106.12 |
| Inhalation anaesthesia, twice the base rate | EUR 123.14 |
| Cruciate ligament surgery, twice the base rate | EUR 461.78 |
| GOT fees together, net | EUR 738.28, with VAT EUR 878.55 |
| Implant, materials, medication, clinic, checks and physiotherapy | about EUR 700 to 1,400 |
| Total bill | about EUR 1,580 to 2,280 |
| With surgery cover, up to four times the rate, 20 percent excess | your share about EUR 320 to 460 |
The surgery fee itself is not even a third of the bill. Without insurance you pay about EUR 1,600 to 2,300, with surgery cover a few hundred euros. Surgery policies often pay only a limited amount for physiotherapy.
The fee for the operation itself is usually the smaller part. On top come the examination, X-ray or ultrasound, blood tests before anaesthesia, the anaesthesia itself, implants and materials, medication, one or more days in the clinic and follow-up checks. German VAT of 19 percent is added to everything.
Vets in Germany must bill under a federal fee scale, the Gebührenordnung für Tierärztinnen und Tierärzte (GOT). It sets a base rate for every service, which a practice may raise up to three times, and up to four times in the emergency service. Clinics with expensive equipment often charge two to three times the base rate. Unlike in some other countries, prices are not freely set, but the range is wide.
The table shows the GOT fee for the procedure itself, net and without anaesthesia, materials or clinic stay, next to the usual total bill from published cost examples.
The bigger the dog, the more anaesthetic, implant and medication it needs. With breeds over 30 kilos you will tend to land at the top end of the ranges.
| Procedure | GOT base rate, net | GOT three times, net | Usual total bill |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neutering a male | EUR 70.60 | EUR 211.80 | about EUR 300 to 600 |
| Spaying a female including the uterus | EUR 192.00 | EUR 576.00 | about EUR 500 to 1,000 |
| Torn cruciate ligament | EUR 230.89 | EUR 692.67 | about EUR 1,500 to 4,000 |
| Gastric torsion (bloat) with fixation | EUR 256.55 | EUR 769.65 | about EUR 1,200 to 5,000, mostly out of hours |
| Foreign body from stomach or gut | EUR 146.98 to 159.91 | EUR 440.94 to 479.73 | about EUR 800 to 1,500 |
| Inhalation anaesthesia, base fee | EUR 61.57 | EUR 184.71 | part of every larger operation |
| X-ray, per image | EUR 26.53 | EUR 79.59 | usually two or more images |
Bloat or a swallowed toy does not wait until Monday. In the emergency service billing starts at twice the base rate and goes up to four times, plus an emergency fee of EUR 50 net. The surgery fee for bloat alone can then exceed EUR 1,000 net.
The emergency service covers 6 pm to 8 am, weekends and public holidays. Expect an emergency operation to cost about double what the same procedure costs during opening hours. Save the number of the nearest animal clinic (Tierklinik) with a night service before you need it.
The current GOT has applied since November 2022 and raised the rates considerably. The Federal Statistical Office measured that vet services cost 27.2 percent more in August 2023 than a year before. If you plan with figures from older guides, you will be too low.
Policies taken out before 2022 sometimes only reimburse up to twice the base rate. Then a noticeable share of every operation stays with you.
In the last large German test, well rated surgery cover (OP-Versicherung) cost about EUR 184 to 206 a year for a young Jack Russell and EUR 249 to 324 for a seven year old Labrador. It pays for operations, usually with treatment before and after within a set period, but not for vaccinations or treatment without surgery.
You do not need it if you keep a fixed reserve of about EUR 3,000 to 5,000 for your dog and could cope with two operations in one year. It is more worthwhile for large breeds with known joint problems and for anyone without a reserve. Sign while the dog is young, because known conditions are excluded later.
Questions and answers
The surgery fee alone is EUR 230.89 to 692.67 net under the GOT. With diagnosis, anaesthesia, implant, clinic and aftercare it is usually EUR 1,500 to 4,000.
The GOT fee for a male is EUR 70.60 to 211.80 net, for a female including the uterus EUR 192 to 576. Anaesthesia and aftercare usually add a few hundred euros.
Because the GOT allows one to three times the base rate, up to four times out of hours. Materials, anaesthesia method and clinic stay also differ.
Many practices and clinics offer instalments or financing. Ask before the operation, in an emergency there is often no time.
Only if the policy covers treatment outside its home country for longer stays. Many do so only for holidays. After moving, check the terms or switch to a German policy.
Many vets in larger German cities speak English. The invoice and the cost estimate are usually in German, so ask for each item to be explained.
It gets more expensive with age, and many insurers stop accepting new contracts from a certain age. Known conditions are excluded. For older dogs a reserve is often the more honest solution.
