Is road bike insurance worth it in Germany?

In short

For a road bike from about EUR 2,000 a separate policy is usually worth it, because with a road bike the crash is the bigger risk, and contents insurance never pays for that. Full cover for a EUR 4,000 bike costs around EUR 150 a year. If you ride races, you need a policy that includes them explicitly.

What is different with a road bike

A road bike is rarely stolen in front of the supermarket, because it seldom stands unattended. It gets expensive when you crash: a broken shifter, a buckled wheel or a cracked carbon frame quickly cost several hundred to a few thousand euros.

Contents insurance pays for none of this. It only replaces theft, and only up to a limit that in many contracts is far below the price of a good road bike.

DamageContents with bike add-onRoad bike policy
Theft from cellar or flatyes, up to the limityes, usually new value in the first years
Theft on the road, such as at a caféonly with bike add-onyes, follow the lock rules
Crash during trainingnoyes
Cracked carbon frame after a crashnoyes, often checked by a specialist workshop
Transport damage on a roof racknodepends on the policy
Damage during a racenoonly if races are included

Carbon and crashes: the expensive case

A carbon frame can be damaged invisibly after a crash. Bike shops then often advise replacing it, even without a visible crack. Without insurance you pay for the new frame, with insurance the policy usually asks for an expert opinion or a workshop confirmation.

Make sure the policy pays the new value in the first years and does not deduct a percentage deductible. On a EUR 2,500 frame a 20 percent deductible means EUR 500.

Races, sportives and training

Many bike policies exclude races, especially with a mass start. Some cover amateurs at sportives (Jedermannrennen), but not riders with a licence and income from cycling. If you enter races, it has to be written in the terms.

Think of your personal liability insurance (Privathaftpflicht) too. Many policies exclude damage in races and the training for them. Normal group rides are covered.

Bikes brought from abroad and trips home

If you brought your road bike to Germany, you can usually insure it with the original invoice, even in a foreign language, plus the frame number and photos. Some policies only accept bikes up to a certain age at the start, so a bike older than a few years may only get theft cover through contents insurance.

Flying home with the bike box is a common risk for expats. Check whether the policy covers transport damage on flights and for how many weeks it applies outside Germany. Airlines pay only limited amounts for damaged sports equipment.

When you do not need road bike insurance

If you ride an older aluminium bike worth less than about EUR 1,000, a few years of premiums exceed what you could get back. Contents insurance with a bike add-on is then enough.

If you have savings for a crash and keep the bike in your flat, you can carry the risk yourself. Road bike insurance protects against the big loss, not against wear like chains and tyres, which you pay for anyway in the long run.

Step by step

  1. Note the new price of your road bike including pedals, bike computer and wheels.
  2. Check your contents insurance: is there a bike add-on and how high is the limit?
  3. Decide whether you ride races or only training and group rides.
  4. Choose a policy with crash damage, new value and no percentage deductible.
  5. Check transport by car, on racks, in a bike box and on flights.
  6. Keep invoice, frame number and photos safe.

Checklist

  • Crash and accident damage included
  • New value in the first years
  • Races included if you enter them
  • Parts such as wheels and bike computer insured
  • Transport damage on trips covered
  • No high percentage deductible

Common mistakes

  • Relying on contents insurance, which never pays for crashes
  • Riding a sportive although the policy excludes races
  • Leaving expensive parts like wheels and power meters out of the sum insured
  • Choosing a percentage deductible and paying hundreds yourself after a claim

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

Does contents insurance pay if my road bike is stolen?

Yes after a break in to your flat or cellar, on the road only with a bike add-on. Either way only up to the bike limit, which is often too low for expensive road bikes.

Is a crash during training covered?

In a road bike policy with accident damage, yes. Contents insurance never pays for crashes.

Are sportives covered?

Only in policies that include races explicitly. Many exclude mass start events, and licensed riders are almost always excluded.

How is carbon damage checked?

Usually by a specialist workshop or an expert. Keep damaged parts until the claim is settled.

Can I insure a road bike I bought outside Germany?

Usually yes, with the invoice and frame number. Check the maximum age the policy accepts at the start.

Is the bike covered when I fly home?

Many policies apply worldwide or across Europe for a limited time. Check that transport damage on flights is included.

Is wear covered?

Some policies pay for worn chains or brakes, often after a waiting period. Do not expect this to pay back the premium.
