What insurance do I need when I get a dog in Germany?

In short

What insurance do I need when I get a dog in Germany? Essential is dog owner's liability (Hundehaftpflicht) from day one, about EUR 35 to 150 a year; in seven federal states it is compulsory for every dog. Personal liability insurance does not cover dogs. Surgery cover from about EUR 4 to 12 a month is worth it, as a torn cruciate ligament costs EUR 2,500 to 4,500.

This is the cover when the family gets the dog.

Dog liability, compulsory in Hamburgabout EUR 50 to 70 a year

Alternatively full health cover for a large dogabout EUR 240 to 420 a year

With liability and surgery cover the family pays about EUR 210 to 620 a year; a single cruciate ligament operation would cost more.

When you get a dog: the order

When you get a dog in Germany, dog liability insurance comes first. Under German law the keeper is liable even without fault if the dog injures a person or damages property. A personal injury claim can run into millions.

Next is the question of who pays vet bills. Surgery cover protects against large bills, full health cover also against ongoing ones.

Full health covernoabout EUR 11 to 35 a month, young dogwithout savings for vet bills

Dog liability: personal liability is not enough

The German model terms for personal liability (Privathaftpflicht) expressly exclude liability as a dog keeper. Your own dog therefore needs its own policy, valid from the day the dog moves in, puppies included.

Look for cover of at least EUR 10 million, damage to rented and borrowed property, and cover for friends who walk the dog. In states with compulsory cover the authority often wants proof when you register the dog.

Surgery or health cover for your dog

Surgery cover pays operations under anaesthetic and usually aftercare. For a young dog it starts at about EUR 4 to 12 a month. A torn cruciate ligament with surgery and aftercare costs EUR 2,500 to 4,500, a foreign body in the gut EUR 1,500 to 3,500.

Full health cover also pays examinations, medicines and often prevention: about EUR 11 to 18 a month for a young small dog, EUR 20 to 35 for a large one. The younger the dog at the start, the cheaper and the fewer exclusions.

Puppies

Take out dog liability before you collect the puppy. Accidents happen on the way home and in the first days, and as the new keeper you are liable for them.

Surgery and health cover often has waiting periods of a few weeks. Taking it out on the day the dog moves in means earlier protection. Conditions known before the start are usually excluded.

When you do not need pet health insurance

If you can set aside EUR 3,000 to 4,000 for the dog, you do not need full health cover. Dog liability never replaces savings, though, because liability claims can be unlimited.
