What paramedics get from employer and statutory insurance

Employed paramedics (Notfallsanitäter) at aid organisations, municipalities or private ambulance services have statutory accident insurance, paid by the employer. It covers call-outs, the station and the direct commute. Infections count as an occupational disease in healthcare. A statutory accident pension only starts at a 20 percent reduction in earning capacity.

Damage to patients or other cars is normally handled by the operator's liability and the ambulance's motor insurance. Towards your own employer, labour court rules apply: no liability for slight negligence, a share for medium and usually full liability for gross negligence. Paramedics who serve as civil servants in a professional fire brigade will find their situation on the page for firefighters.

Priorities: what paramedics should insure first

The costliest risk for paramedics is being permanently unfit for emergency duty. So disability cover comes before everything else, followed by liability and legal cover.

Disability cover: start early, describe your duties

Insurers usually rate ambulance work as high risk. The same paramedic can be two to three risk classes apart with different providers, so comparing pays off here. If you spend time in dispatch, training or admin, state that share.

Starting in training is cheapest: EUR 30 to 45 a month for a EUR 1,000 pension at 19. At 35, a EUR 1,800 pension costs around EUR 170 to 190. The statutory reduced earning capacity pension barely helps, as it only applies if you can work less than six hours a day in any job.

Liability and criminal law for your own measures

Under the Paramedics Act, paramedics may carry out invasive and drug-based measures on their own responsibility until a doctor arrives. Conditions: you learned the measure in training, and it is needed to avert danger to life or serious harm. That increases your personal responsibility.

If something goes wrong, a criminal investigation for negligent bodily injury is more likely than a civil lawsuit. One professional association for ambulance staff provides criminal legal cover if proceedings are dropped or end in a negligence conviction only. Its work liability covers EUR 3 million for recourse claims, but damage to the employer's property only up to EUR 2,500 per claim.

What paramedics usually do not need

You do not need motor insurance for the ambulance, the operator insures it. Accident insurance with a high sum does not replace disability cover. If an association or union already gives you legal cover for work, a second policy means paying twice. Self-employed medical service providers will find separate pages for business types.

Step by step

  1. Apply for disability cover during training or right after your exam.
  2. Get quotes from several providers, as risk classes differ widely.
  3. State any share of dispatch, training or admin work in the application.
  4. Check whether an association or union includes work liability and criminal legal cover.
  5. Take out personal liability with at least EUR 10 million cover.

Checklist

  • Disability cover without abstract referral and with infection clause
  • Criminal legal cover for negligence allegations on call-outs
  • Liability for employer recourse claims
  • Known limit for damage to employer property
  • Personal liability with a high enough sum

Common mistakes

  • Asking only one disability insurer and accepting a poor risk class
  • Assuming the operator pays everything, even for gross negligence
  • Giving a statement after an incident without legal advice
  • Seeing accident insurance as a substitute for disability cover

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

Is professional liability insurance compulsory for paramedics in Germany?

No.

Cover for recourse after gross negligence and for criminal proceedings is sensible,

and professional associations and unions often include it in the fee.

How much is disability insurance for paramedics?

Published examples: EUR 30 to 45 a month in training,

EUR 100 to 150 at 24 and EUR 170 to 190 at 35, each with cover to age 67.

Why is disability cover so expensive in the ambulance service?

Because insurers place ambulance work in a high risk group.

Paramedics with admin or dispatch duties may get a better rating.

Who pays if I am injured on a call-out?

Your employer's statutory accident insurance: treatment, rehabilitation,

injury benefit and a pension from a 20 percent reduction in earning capacity.

Am I protected when I act under section 2a NotSanG?

The law allows these measures under conditions.

Whether they were justified is decided by a court in a dispute.

Criminal legal cover pays your defence if proceedings are dropped or only negligence remains.

Does this apply to emergency medical technicians too?

The order of priorities is the same.

The independent powers under section 2a NotSanG apply only to paramedics (Notfallsanitäter),

not to Rettungssanitäter.
