What your employer and the law cover for professional firefighters
Most professional firefighters in Germany (Berufsfeuerwehr) are civil servants in a city's technical fire service. An accident during operations, training or on the direct route to the station is a service accident under section 31 of the Civil Servants Pension Act. Treatment, accident compensation and, if you become unfit, an accident pension come from your employer.
Illness is different. A pension for unfitness caused by illness is paid only after five years of service under section 4 of the same act. Public sector employees, for example in company fire brigades, are covered by statutory accident insurance and receive no Beihilfe.
Operational duty and unfitness for service
Breathing apparatus, heat, shift work and heavy lifting require a level of health beyond office work. Whether your state has a separate fire service unfitness rule is decided by each state civil service act. Bavaria, for example, has its own rule for the police in Article 128, while Article 132 refers firefighters only to the special retirement age.
For your cover this means: the disability policy needs a genuine unfitness for service clause that expressly includes the technical fire service or a special unfitness for service. Only then does it pay when you lose operational duty but could still work in the control centre.
Liability for operations and vehicles
Towards citizens, the city is liable first under Article 34 of the Basic Law. For gross negligence it can claim the money back from you under section 48 of the Civil Servants Status Act, for example after a crash with a fire engine.
That is why duty liability costs more for professional firefighters than for administration. Check whether damage to service vehicles and equipment such as aerial ladders or breathing apparatus is included. Many tariffs cover service vehicles only in part.
Shifts, commuting and your own car
Firefighters on 24-hour shifts often commute far. The direct route counts as service, but damage to your own car is not covered by that. Only your own motor insurance helps, with comprehensive cover if the car is new or financed.
Private accident insurance makes sense for free time, because service accident care only pays on duty. Make sure your occupation is stated correctly, otherwise benefits may be reduced.

What professional firefighters do not need twice
Accident insurance only for operations is unnecessary, service accident care already pays there. Many unions and associations include duty liability for members; check the limits before buying your own.
Volunteer firefighters and self-employed people are not covered on this page. Businesses have separate pages by type of business.
