Candela builds foiling electric boats in Sweden, the C-8 lifts out of the water on hydrofoils while under way and thereby reaches ranges that conventional electric boats cannot achieve. This technology is new, valuable and places demands of its own on the insurance: foils, actuators and the control software are components that do not exist in classic boatbuilding.
For hull insurance the hydrofoils are the exposed part. They project below the hull, are made of carbon and are the first to be hit in a grounding or a collision with floating debris. Damage of that kind is covered under full hull cover; wear and software faults are not. Foil damage on the C-8 is a workshop case at the manufacturer with corresponding costs and downtime, so set the sum insured at the full replacement value.
On a Candela the battery accounts for a considerable share of the value, and charging has to follow the manufacturer's specification. Fire and thermal runaway are covered, including while charging at the berth, provided the charging installation meets that specification. Because the series is young there are few independent workshops, so in a claim expect to be tied to the manufacturer and to face longer downtime than with a combustion boat.
