In Québec, Esquif builds open canoes from T-Formex, a successor to the earlier Royalex that combines impact resistance with repairability and has become the standard for whitewater canoes. Prospecteur and Canyon are whitewater boats that withstand contact with rock without deforming the way polyethylene does.
T-Formex can be repaired, and in insurance terms that is the advantage over polyethylene: a crack can be properly closed, and damage to the hull does not automatically mean a total economic loss. With a boat value in the four-figure range this justifies hull insurance, because a repair is the likely case, not a total loss.
In whitewater the line runs between normal use and a single event. Scratches, abrasion and slight deformation from contact with rock are part of normal use and are not a claim. Covered are gashes, breakage after the boat has become jammed, loss of the boat on an open stretch of water and theft. In whitewater, personal accident cover is the element that really counts; we do not offer third-party liability cover for boats propelled by muscle power.
