Nicols of France builds houseboats for canal cruising and charter operations; models that can be driven without a licence are widespread in France, the Netherlands and Brandenburg. What is decisive for the insurance is whether use is private or commercial.
A motorboat policy is not enough for a houseboat: the interior fittings account for a considerable part of the value and are included with us at three per cent of the sum insured. Anyone who rents the boat out needs the commercial cover; private renting out for up to 30 days in the insurance year is included in the normal policy, with a written rental agreement. On canals the typical damage is contact: lock wall, bollard, bridge. All of it full hull cover.

Licence
A powerboat licence (inland or coastal) is required from 15 hp (11.03 kW).
Registration
