Working out the cost of charter deposit insurance, premium and deductible when chartering

The premium is usually around nine per cent of the deposit lodged.

Charter companies ask for a deposit, usually between fifteen hundred and four thousand euros, that covers the deductible on the boat insurance. It is blocked when you take over the boat and released when you bring her back undamaged. If there is any damage the deposit is gone, however small it is.

Charter deposit insurance pays that amount back to you. It is neither liability cover nor hull cover; it covers exactly the deductible that the charterer carries. On a deposit of two thousand five hundred euros it costs around two hundred and twenty euros for the charter.

If you charter regularly, you should also look at skipper liability. With us it is built into the boat insurance from Basis-Plus upwards and applies to chartered boats as well; in Premium there is no size limit at all.
