Calculating sail area, tariff class and premium for sailing boats

What counts is the upwind sail area: mainsail plus the largest headsail. Spinnakers and gennakers are not included.

On motor boats the premium follows engine power; on sailing boats it follows the sail area. Insurers count the upwind sail area, mainsail plus the largest headsail. Downwind sails such as a spinnaker or gennaker are left out, because they are only flown in certain conditions.

The area determines the tariff class. The bands range from twelve square metres and under for dinghies to more than 120 square metres for large cruising yachts. Only once you know your own area can you compare quotations at all; where the figure is vague, insurers each work it out their own way.

Two further points worth checking if you sail: with us, club regattas are included from Basis-Plus and open events in Premium, in both cases along with the associated training sessions. And we set no fixed age limit for the mast and rigging; a dismasting is assessed on its cause, not on the age of the rig.
