What if a rope goes into the jet pump?
Short answer
A typical drive damage on a jet ski comes from ingestion.
In none of the wordings reviewed do the words impeller or jet pump even appear.
A mooring line, a drifting net, a plastic bag, sand in the shallows: a jet drive sucks in, and what it sucks in goes through the impeller. The damage runs from a bent blade to a destroyed pump unit with knock-on damage to the shaft. For jet ski owners this is the standard loss, not the exception.
In insurance terms it is an orphan. In none of the thirteen wordings reviewed do the words impeller, jet pump or drive unit appear at all. Machinery damage without external influence is excluded in nearly all of them, and whether an ingested rope amounts to external influence is precisely the point that then gets argued. In practice that means this loss is effectively uninsured in the wordings we reviewed.
What you can do here is worth more than any clause. Keep clearance from the bottom in shallow water, watch for fishing gear and buoy lines, and lift the impeller for a look after any ingestion before you carry on. And if damage does occur, photograph the foreign object before you remove it. That is the evidence of external influence the argument will later turn on.
