Ally Faltkanadier (Bergans); cover, cost and conditions
Ally builds folding canoes in Norway, an aluminium frame with a boat skin, which pack into two carry bags while achieving the handling of a hard shell canoe. For wilderness trips in Scandinavia and Canada this is the standard solution, because the boat travels as air baggage. It is precisely this transport that matters for insurance.
A folding canoe on a journey is baggage, and baggage gets lost or damaged. Our full hull cover covers transport damage with suitable means of transport and theft from locked rooms and vehicles. For air transport the following applies: it is not automatically included, so please ask before you travel. Damage caused by the airline is in any case first a matter for the airline's own liability.
For trips outside Europe you need the worldwide cruising range level. Canada, Alaska, Siberia: register the trip in advance with the route and the period, and then the cover is stated in the policy. The equipment can be insured as accessories. We do not offer boat third-party liability for muscle-powered boats; as a rule your private liability insurance applies here, and you should check it for validity abroad.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is air transport covered?
Not automatically, so please ask before you travel. Damage caused by the airline is first a matter for the airline's own liability.
Do I need an extension for Canada?
Yes, the worldwide level. Register the route and the period in advance, because a trip already made cannot be included afterwards.
The cover that fits

Nautical information What counts before you cast off, papers, equipment, waters
Licence
No licence required; muscle-powered craft are licence-free, federal waterways included.
Registration
No registration required. Some waters do ask for a local permit or sticker before you launch.
Waters
Inland lakes, rivers and the coast, mind nature-reserve rules; many stretches are closed seasonally.
Equipment
Buoyancy aid or lifejacket, buoyancy bags in the boat, spraydeck, a waterproof case for phone and papers, a whistle.
Cruising range
The agreed cruising range is stated in the policy and can be extended for a single trip at any time.
Weather
Offshore wind is the main risk: it carries you away from the bank and makes the return hard. Check wind direction and the gust forecast before you launch.
General guidance, not a complete account; what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and your boat’s manual. Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.
Series by Ally, with value and cover
Ally folding canoe 17 (classic) is a canoe from Ally (Norway), built from 1980 to 1998, and today changes hands at between €1,000 and €4,000.
Ally 15 / 16.5 folding canoe is a canoe from Ally (Norway), built since 1995, and today changes hands at between €1,000 and €4,000.
Ally folding canoe is a canoe from Ally (Norway), built since 1985, and today changes hands at between €1,000 and €5,000.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a canoe transport and storage are the risk, not the water. Theft from the roof rack is the most common case.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repairs are predictable. Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
