Floating holiday homes and marina houseboats are a category of their own: craft that stay permanently at their berth and have either no drive at all or only an auxiliary one. This shifts the insurance completely, cruising risks fall away and instead the topics of a building come to the fore: storm, water ingress, frost, burglary and fire.
We underwrite these objects under hull insurance, because they remain watercraft in legal terms. For the risk assessment we nevertheless need the information that the object lies in a fixed position and how it is connected: shore power, water connection, waste water. Water ingress through a faulty shore connection is a frequent and expensive case, and whether it is covered depends on proper installation.
With a floating holiday home the contents are regularly the greater value compared with the hull. Personal effects are included free of charge up to three percent of the sum insured, at least 1,000 and at most 3,000 euros, which is not enough for a fully furnished home. Report furnishings, kitchen appliances and electronics as separate items; only reported values are replaced in full.
