Worth knowing
Chris-Craft; cover, cost and conditions
Chris-Craft is the oldest name in American sports boat building and today builds GRP boats in retro style: Launch, Corsair and Catalina quote the mahogany runabouts of the thirties, built with modern laminate and a teak deck. For the insurance, the share of teak and varnish is the decisive point: on these boats it accounts for a considerable part of the value and is the most sensitive surface in hail, storm and vandalism.
With the genuine mahogany classics the case is different. A restored wooden Chris-Craft from the fifties is a collector's item whose value comes solely from its state of preservation. We insure wooden boats with a surcharge from a sum insured of 20,000 euros, and on these boats a valuation report is not optional but the basis of the agreed value. Expect a revaluation after every overhaul of the varnish build-up.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
How do I insure a wooden boat?
Through an agreed value based on a valuation report. From a sum insured of 20,000 euros a surcharge applies to wooden hulls, and in return the value stated in the report is paid in the event of a claim, not a depreciated value.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
