Worth knowing
Kawasaki Jet Ski; cover, cost and conditions
Kawasaki coined the term Jet Ski, and the brand is so well known that today it counts as a generic name for personal watercraft. The programme runs from the STX through the Ultra with a supercharged engine to the SX-R as a stand-up craft. With the Ultra range the power output counts, with the SX-R the way it is used.
For Kawasaki too the following applies: private personal liability insurance excludes personal watercraft. Our jet ski third-party liability starts at around 99 euros a year, and the hull insurance comes without any requirement for an immobiliser and without a night clause. For a fitted GPS or Bluetooth tracking device there is a ten per cent discount on the hull insurance; look for a model with an emergency power supply, because experienced offenders search for the device and disconnect it.
With the Ultra models, top speed is often the obstacle. We also underwrite fast craft, including racing cover for training and competition. Trailer and pontoon are covered as well, the trailer at no extra premium. As for the paperwork: registration marks and licences depend on power output and waters, not on the brand.
The two-strokes of the eighties and nineties are strongly represented in our portfolio: the JS 440 and 550, the 650 SX, the 750 SXi and SXi Pro, plus the 900 and 1100 ZXi. These craft cost little but hold their collector value, and a well kept stand-up craft fetches more on the market than a depreciated value calculation produces. Agree the agreed value. Spare parts for the two-strokes come mainly from the second-hand market and from the accessory trade; that makes no difference to the cover, but it does to the repair time after a claim.
Two points shape the claims history on the older models. Engine damage from wear or from a mixture set too lean is not a hull insurance claim, but water ingress after a capsize or foreign objects being drawn in after a collision is. And for transport the following applies: the trailer is covered at no extra premium if its value is stated in the contract, and theft from the trailer is the most frequent total loss on jet skis.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Do you insure older stand-up models such as the 750 SXi?
Yes, with no age limit. Value, year of construction, power output and cruising range count for the premium and the cover. With well kept two-strokes the agreed value is worthwhile, because the market value lies above the depreciated value.
Do you also insure very fast models such as the Ultra?
Yes. A high top speed is no reason for us to decline; we also underwrite craft doing more than 100 km/h.
What does a tracker achieve?
A ten per cent discount on the hull insurance. It does not prevent theft, but it increases the risk of the offender being discovered. Choose a device with an emergency power supply and check it regularly.

Licence
A powerboat licence is required on almost every water.
Registration
Registration from 3 hp; an official number or boat certificate is required.
Waters
In many places only on designated areas; forbidden on Lake Constance and Bavarian waters.
Equipment
Lifejacket, kill switch with lanyard, helmet when racing; check the kill cord before every run.
Cruising range
Up to 2 nm off the coast is advisable; proof of insurance is compulsory in Croatia, Italy and Spain.
Weather
From Beaufort 4 it gets demanding; wind against current builds a steep, short sea.
General guidance, not a complete account; what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and your boat’s manual. Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a jet ski theft cover and engine output matter. We write them with and without an immobiliser and with no age limit on the craft.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
