Askeladden builds open boats and cabin boats in Norway for the skerry coast, with high freeboard and a deep V, designed for cold water and short steep waves. The boats are used all year round, including in winter. That is exactly where the main claims pattern comes from: frost damage to the cooling circuit, the fresh water system and the ballast when the boat is not drained between trips.
We cover frost damage if the boat has been properly prepared for winter. With year round use this does not mean laying the boat up, but frost protection during ongoing operation: cooling circuit with antifreeze, fresh water tanks empty, bilge dry. Anyone leaving the boat at the pontoon in winter should also have a bilge pump with its own power supply, because snow and rainwater that freezes lifts floorboards and bursts panelling.

Is frost damage covered?
Yes, if the boat was properly prepared for winter. Leaving water in the cooling circuit or in the tanks does not count as proper preparation, and in that case the damage is caused by the omission and not by the frost.
