Worth knowing
Itiwit (Decathlon); cover, cost and conditions
Itiwit is the watersports brand of Decathlon and covers inflatable kayaks and SUP boards in the entry-level segment, boats and boards priced in the low three figures that have made the sport accessible to many. At these values the insurance question is a different one than for a touring kayak costing three thousand euros.
With a boat value of a few hundred euros, hull insurance rarely pays off economically, as the premium over a few years reaches the replacement value. What does make sense is personal accident cover. It covers injuries on board and when getting in and out, and this risk does not depend on the value of the boat. A fall while climbing onto a SUP is the same fall whether the board costs one hundred or three thousand euros.
We do not offer boat third-party liability for muscle-powered craft. Check your private third-party liability policy; for beginners this is the most important point of all, because the most frequent cause of loss among newcomers is collision with other water sports users. Not every private liability policy includes watercraft; one phone call clarifies it.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is hull insurance worthwhile for an entry-level boat?
With a value of a few hundred euros, rarely, because over a few years the premium reaches the replacement value. Personal accident cover is the sensible product here.
What is the most important cover for beginners?
Third-party liability, as collisions with other water sports users are the most frequent case among newcomers. For muscle-powered boats the private third-party liability policy applies here.
The cover that fits

Nautical information What counts before you cast off, papers, equipment, waters
Licence
No licence required; muscle-powered craft are licence-free, federal waterways included.
Registration
No registration required. Some waters do ask for a local permit or sticker before you launch.
Waters
Inland lakes, rivers and the coast, mind nature-reserve rules; many stretches are closed seasonally.
Equipment
Buoyancy aid or lifejacket, buoyancy bags in the boat, spraydeck, a waterproof case for phone and papers, a whistle.
Cruising range
The agreed cruising range is stated in the policy and can be extended for a single trip at any time.
Weather
Offshore wind is the main risk: it carries you away from the bank and makes the return hard. Check wind direction and the gust forecast before you launch.
General guidance, not a complete account; what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and your boat’s manual. Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.
Series by Itiwit, with value and cover
Itiwit X100 / X500 is a kayak from Itiwit (France), built since 2015, and today changes hands at between €1,000 and €2,000.
Itiwit SUP X100 / X500 is a paddle boat from Itiwit (France), built since 2015, and today changes hands at between €1,000 and €2,000.
Aufblasbares Kajak / SUP is a kayak from Itiwit (France), built since 2010, and today changes hands at between €1,000 and €3,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repairs are predictable. Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
On a kayak accident cover comes first; liability is usually handled by your private policy. Hull cover deals with theft and transit damage.
On paddle craft theft and transit damage are the rule, collisions the exception.
