How the place works
The canal is commercial water, and yachts pass through as guests. Ninety-eight kilometres with nowhere to turn aside, meeting seagoing ships across a hundred and two metres, locks at both ends and waiting berths where everyone wants to tie up at once.
What breaks there
Suction and wash from the large units press small boats against the bank or against the neighbour at the waiting berth. The second case is berthing damage at Holtenau and Brunsbüttel, where wind and current push many boats into one chamber in a short time.
What this means for your policy
Damage while locking and at waiting berths is hull damage to your own boat and liability damage to the other, and usually both at once. Anyone carrying only liability pays for their own gelcoat here.
