Worth knowing
Maxum; cover, cost and conditions
Maxum was the second brand of the Brunswick group alongside Bayliner and built affordable bowriders and sport cruisers until the brand was discontinued in 2009. The boats are widely available on the used market today and are often the entry into boating. It is precisely with these boats that the most frequent miscalculation is made when arranging insurance: the purchase price of a twenty-year-old Maxum says nothing about what a hull repair or damage to the drive costs.
A realistic view: with a boat value of around 15,000 €, damage to the drive quickly costs a third of that, and a laminate repair at the keel much the same. Anyone who does without hull insurance here is only insuring the damage caused to others. Limited hull cover covers fire, storm, theft of the whole boat and damage in transport and costs little at this sum, while full hull cover adds grounding and collision, the most common damage of all.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is hull insurance worth it for an older, inexpensive boat?
Mostly yes, because the repair costs are not based on the value of the boat. Damage to the drive costs the same whether the boat is worth 15,000 or 60,000 €. Limited hull cover is very inexpensive at low sums insured.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
