Worth knowing
Mistral; cover, cost and conditions
Mistral shaped windsurfing from 1976 onwards and, with the One Design, was an Olympic class from 1996 to 2004; today the brand builds windsurf boards and SUPs, and the stock of older boards is considerable. With a Mistral One Design or an Equipe from the nineties, the question of value is the more interesting one.
Classic windsurf boards have a collectors market, and a well preserved original can be worth more than a current leisure board. With collectors items, have the value documented by market comparison or an expert report and record it as an agreed value. Without it the value would be written down by age, and the result would have nothing to do with the collectors value.
For current boards the usual applies: the rig as an accessory in the application, race inclusion for regatta use, a cruising range level that matches the waters. Delamination on older boards is material fatigue and is not covered; a break after a fall or transport damage is. We do not offer boat third-party liability for muscle powered and wind powered craft.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
How do I insure a classic windsurf board?
With a documented value as an agreed value, by market comparison or an expert report. With collectors items the value is well above a write down by age.
Is delamination on an old board covered?
No, that is material fatigue. A break after a fall or transport damage is covered under full hull cover.

Nautical information What counts before you cast off, papers, equipment, waters
Licence
No licence required; muscle-powered craft are licence-free, federal waterways included.
Registration
No registration required. Some waters do ask for a local permit or sticker before you launch.
Waters
Inland lakes, rivers and the coast, mind nature-reserve rules; many stretches are closed seasonally.
Equipment
Buoyancy aid or lifejacket, buoyancy bags in the boat, spraydeck, a waterproof case for phone and papers, a whistle.
Cruising range
The agreed cruising range is stated in the policy and can be extended for a single trip at any time.
Weather
Offshore wind is the main risk: it carries you away from the bank and makes the return hard. Check wind direction and the gust forecast before you launch.
General guidance, not a complete account; what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and your boat’s manual. Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
Dinghies are mostly trailed and stored ashore, and that is where most damage happens: rigging, strapping down and winter storage.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repairs are predictable. Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
On paddle craft theft and transit damage are the rule, collisions the exception.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
