In Canada, Taiga Motors builds the Orca, a fully electric jet ski with a lithium-ion battery and an output that matches combustion models. For insurance purposes the drive is the decisive difference: no fuel means no fire risk from petrol, but instead a battery whose handling follows its own rules. Thermal events involving lithium batteries are rare, but costly when they occur, and a damaged battery is practically always a total loss of the battery.
Our hull insurance covers fire and explosion including the consequences of thermal runaway, and it does so during charging as well. The condition is that charging is carried out as the manufacturer prescribes: with the charger supplied, at a suitable socket, and not unattended overnight in a hall with other boats. Anyone who observes these requirements has the event covered; anyone who improvises risks the objection of an increase in risk.
The second point is the value of the battery in relation to the machine. On an electric jet ski the battery accounts for a considerable part of the total value, and water damage to the battery housing is more expensive than any engine damage on a combustion model. Set the sum insured according to the full replacement value and check whether your deductible is in proportion to the price of a battery replacement.

Yes, fire and explosion including thermal runaway are insured, provided that charging was carried out according to the manufacturer's instructions. Unattended charging overnight in a hall can count as an increase in risk.
