Worth knowing
Zegul / Tahe Outdoors; cover, cost and conditions
Zegul and Tahe Outdoors build sea kayaks in composite and plastic in Estonia; Greenland and Reval are touring boats for the Baltic and exposed coasts, technically on the level of the English manufacturers and below them in price. The composite versions are in the middle four-figure range and justify hull insurance.
With a composite sea kayak, repairability is the argument for the hull insurance: laminate damage can be repaired properly, and the repair case occurs more often than a total loss. A crack after contact with rock, a damaged hull side after a hard landing in the surf, both are repairable and covered by the full hull cover.
For Baltic tours the cruising range level North Sea/Baltic Sea is sufficient, which includes the Kattegat and the Skagerrak. Anyone travelling to Sweden, Finland or into the Finnish archipelago stays within it; for northern Norway or the Atlantic coast the next level is needed. Register longer tours in advance. The touring equipment can be co-insured as accessories if it is stated in the application.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Does the Baltic level cover the archipelago?
Yes, the North Sea/Baltic Sea level covers the Baltic including the Kattegat and the Skagerrak, and therefore the Finnish and Swedish archipelagos too.
Is hull insurance worthwhile for a composite kayak?
Yes, because laminate damage is repairable and the repair case occurs more often than a total loss.

Nautical information What counts before you cast off, papers, equipment, waters
Licence
No licence required; muscle-powered craft are licence-free, federal waterways included.
Registration
No registration required. Some waters do ask for a local permit or sticker before you launch.
Waters
Inland lakes, rivers and the coast, mind nature-reserve rules; many stretches are closed seasonally.
Equipment
Buoyancy aid or lifejacket, buoyancy bags in the boat, spraydeck, a waterproof case for phone and papers, a whistle.
Cruising range
The agreed cruising range is stated in the policy and can be extended for a single trip at any time.
Weather
Offshore wind is the main risk: it carries you away from the bank and makes the return hard. Check wind direction and the gust forecast before you launch.
General guidance, not a complete account; what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and your boat’s manual. Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.

On a kayak accident cover comes first; liability is usually handled by your private policy. Hull cover deals with theft and transit damage.
