Worth knowing
Pouch Faltboote (DDR); cover, cost and conditions
The folding boats from Pouch near Bitterfeld were the GDR answer to Klepper and are in circulation in large numbers today, the RZ 85 and RZ 96 being the most widespread types, sturdy boats with a wooden frame that were and still are used on the waters of the Mark Brandenburg and on the Baltic. Their value today is in the low three-figure to four-figure range, depending on the condition of the skin and the completeness of the frame.
Completeness is the decisive point. A Pouch without original ribs or with improvised spare parts is worth considerably less than a complete boat, and spare parts have been unavailable for more than thirty years. In the case of damage to the frame this can amount economically to a total loss, so set the sum insured according to the real replacement value, which a look at the classified ads will give you.
On boats of this age the skin has practically always been renewed or is in need of renewal. Ageing is wear and cannot be insured; damage from outside is covered. With a boat value of this order, hull insurance is a matter of arithmetic, and it is often only worthwhile if the boat has been restored and is correspondingly more valuable. We do not write third-party liability for muscle-powered boats; check your private liability insurance.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
What is a Pouch folding boat worth?
Depending on the condition of the skin and the frame, in the low three-figure to four-figure range. Completeness is decisive, replacement ribs have not been available for thirty years.
Is hull insurance worthwhile?
For a restored boat with a corresponding value, yes. For a used boat in the three-figure range usually not, in which case accident cover is the more sensible product.

Nautical information What counts before you cast off, papers, equipment, waters
Licence
No licence required; muscle-powered craft are licence-free, federal waterways included.
Registration
No registration required. Some waters do ask for a local permit or sticker before you launch.
Waters
Inland lakes, rivers and the coast, mind nature-reserve rules; many stretches are closed seasonally.
Equipment
Buoyancy aid or lifejacket, buoyancy bags in the boat, spraydeck, a waterproof case for phone and papers, a whistle.
Cruising range
The agreed cruising range is stated in the policy and can be extended for a single trip at any time.
Weather
Offshore wind is the main risk: it carries you away from the bank and makes the return hard. Check wind direction and the gust forecast before you launch.
General guidance, not a complete account; what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and your boat’s manual. Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.

On a kayak accident cover comes first; liability is usually handled by your private policy. Hull cover deals with theft and transit damage.
