Worth knowing
Bruce Roberts (Eigenbau); cover, cost and conditions
Home-built boats and small production runs can be insured with NAMMERT, and that is exactly the point here: the designs for home construction in steel and aluminium have been built since 1970 and 1975 respectively, up to the present day. Many boats are one-off pieces with their own fitting-out history, which matters for the valuation when the contract is taken out.
With a one-off piece there is no list value on which compensation could be based. That is why an agreed value is set in the full hull cover and, in the event of a claim, compensation is paid with no deduction for depreciation (new for old), in the Premium tariff without any age limit. Built-in equipment therefore belongs in the itemised list.
The sailing yachts lie between 9 and 15 metres; the premium follows the sail area instead of an engine power, and to this are added value, year of construction and cruising range. For voyages across borders NAMMERT issues the international certificate of insurance automatically in ten languages.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Can a steel boat fitted out by the owner be insured?
Yes. Small production runs and home-built boats can be insured. With a home build to a Roberts design, the value is recorded through an agreed value which applies without any deduction in the event of a claim.
How is a 15 metre sailing yacht rated?
By type of boat, value, year of construction, sail area and cruising range. Up to a sum insured of 2.5 million euros the contract can be taken out online; above that NAMMERT assesses the individual case.

Series by Bruce Roberts (Eigenbau), with value and cover
Roberts 34 / 44 Stahl is a sailing yacht from Bruce Roberts (Eigenbau) (International), built since 1970, and today changes hands at between €20,000 and €120,000.
Roberts Spray / Offshore is a sailing yacht from Bruce Roberts (Eigenbau) (International), built since 1975, and today changes hands at between €15,000 and €90,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
