The range included the sailing boats from the Cape Dory 26 through the 28, 30, 33 and 36 to the 40, the power yachts in 28 to 36 feet and the Cape Dory 40 Explorer Trawler. Build years run from 1961 to 1998, lengths from 3.2 to 13.8 m.
These are classic long keel boats with a solid reputation for seaworthiness, and many are still used for long passages. For insurance that means two things. First, a depreciated book value says little about a well preserved yacht; an agreed fixed value is the better route. Second, the cruising area must match your actual plans, because sailing further than agreed leaves you without cover after a loss.

Is an Atlantic crossing on my Cape Dory covered?
Only if the cruising area has been extended accordingly beforehand. Tell us about the passage in good time and we will review equipment, crew and route and adjust the cover. A loss outside the agreed area is not insured.
What is a motorsailer?
A boat designed for sail and engine in equal measure, with a stronger engine than a pure sailing yacht. For insurance it is treated as a sailing boat with auxiliary power; what counts is length, value, engine power and cruising area.

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
