Fjord Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Today Fjord builds motor yachts between 11 and 16 metres within the Hanse group, with the distinctive hard chine hull and a largely open deck, design yachts for the Mediterranean, with outboard or inboard propulsion. The open deck is the point that stands out in insurance terms: hardly any enclosed spaces, but large upholstered areas, teak and equipment out in the open.
On open yachts, hail and vandalism are the risks that cost the most. A summer thunderstorm hits upholstery, displays and teak directly, and a boat cover protects against rain, not against hailstones. Hail is already covered under limited hull cover, vandalism only under full hull cover. Reflect the value of upholstery, teak and electronics in the sum, because on these yachts it is higher than on enclosed boats of the same length.
The name Fjord stands for two very different eras, and most German Fjord owners sail the older one: the Norwegian boats from 1960 to 1992, the 21 DC Daycruiser, the 21 and 24 Weekender, the 24 Attaché, the 26 Cruiser and the Dolphin. These hulls are heavily laminated, seaworthy and practically indestructible, and that is precisely why their market value lies above what a depreciated value calculation produces. Agree an agreed value based on the replacement value, otherwise in a total loss a fifty year old boat is written down even though it has its price on the market.
On the classics there are two places to check: the transom on boats with an outboard and the through-hull fittings on boats with an inboard. A soft transom and an aged shaft gland are questions of substance and maintenance, not an insured event. Sinking at the berth because of a burst cooling water hose, on the other hand, is a full hull cover claim, provided the system was properly maintained. A second bilge switch with an alarm is the most sensible retrofit of all on these boats.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is vandalism included?
Under full hull cover yes, under limited hull cover no. On open yachts with high-quality upholstery and electronics out in the open, that is an argument for full hull cover.
Do you also insure the old Norwegian Fjord boats, such as a 21 DC?
Yes, with no age limit. Condition, value, engine power and cruising range count for the premium and the cover. On boats of this age the agreed value based on the replacement value is the decisive point.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
